SCENE DETAILS
Depicting the crew of Mk.IV Stirling LK137, (8E-J) of 295 Sqn on the morning of 24th March 1945, as they prepare to take off on a sortie as part of Operation Varsity. Their mission; to tow a Horsa Glider loaded with soldiers from the Royal Ulster Rifles across the Rhine. It was one of 30 aircraft from the squadron that took off from RAF Rivenhall. This particular Stirling had already taken part in D-Day nearly a year earlier and Operation Market Garden.
At approximately 10:30 as the aircraft approached the landing zone on the far side of the Rhine, the port inner engine was hit by AA fire. Pilot W/O Symmons released the glider and ordered the crew to bail out. Symmons remained at the controls and tragically lost his life when the aircraft crashed in Kervenhiem near Xanten. He is buried in Rhienberg War Cemetery.
The rest of the crew survived and landed in British held Netherlands and were soon back flying.
