31 Squadron GR4 Tornado - Bagram Airfield

LIGHTING UP THE DAWN

SCENE DESCRIPTION

4th July 2013, A tornado GR4 diverted into Bagram airfield with a reheat failure and engine surge.

A team of engineers from 31 Sqn, who were deployed at Kandahar, went to recover the aircraft. Working through the night to get the engine checked, diagnosed and fixed, they finally got the engine to ‘light’ just as the magnificent Bagram Dawn was breaking.

The aircraft returned to Kandahar just over 24 hours after landing at the diversion airfield.

You may wonder why the GR4 is on a slight tilt; this is because the area the jet was repaired/tested was actually for A-10s.
