Commissioning a painting

Whether you already have a scene in mind, or never really thought about commissioning a painting before; this guide gives insight to the bespoke painting service I provide.

I create high quality original art for people to admire and enjoy, and I want this service to be available to as many people as possible; not limiting the reach of my artwork by overcharging simply because my paintings are popular. I therefore price my paintings fairly and sensibly based upon size, level of detail and expected time to complete.

Before we look at what's involved in commissioning a painting, here are several examples of my paintings and some of the subjects I've painted to date.

AVIATION & MARITIME

Whether you require a single aircraft/vessel included in your painting, or multiple; anything is possible and nothing too complicated for me to create.

I am often asked to paint scenes depicting WWII crew and their aircraft; especially by relatives of these brave crew members. Using wartime photos as reference, I can create a painting that brings colour and detail to the scene; a painting that can be cherished, passed down to future generations and help keep their story and memory alive. I can also depict actual historical wartime missions and events.

PORTRAITS

Although I specialise in aviation and maritime scenes; my painting ability is not limited to those. I can paint pretty much any subject; dedicating the same passion for detail no matter what I'm depicting.

Portraits of people and pets are popular subjects I am often asked to paint.

THE COMMISSION PROCESS

So, what's involved in commissioning a painting? The process couldn't be any more straightforward. Here's your step by step guide:

1)
The first thing we do is discuss your painting idea. You might know exactly what you'd like, or it might need a bit more brainstorming together to help you decide on various aspects of your scene. All this is fine and there's no charge at all for talking things through over the phone, messenger or email.

2)
Once I have a rough idea of your desired scene, I then provide you with a detailed quote listing suitable sizes for your painting. The quote is free, with no obligation to proceed.

3)
If you'd like to book a painting slot, then the next thing to do is decide and inform me of the size you'd like. I paint a wide range of sizes which helps suite different budgets.

4)
I then send you your booking/deposit invoice. Deposits are 25% of the painting price, with the balance and delivery due upon completion. Here is an example….

Painting price = £120
Deposit = £30
Painting balance = £90
Delivery = £10
Total due upon completion = £100

Im usually booking three to four months ahead which can help people to budget and save towards the balance.

5)
About a week before I'm due to actually start painting, I will get in contact with you and go over the scene idea again. I can also plan out the composition digitally to help with layout and fine tuning the position of various elements.

6)
Once I start your painting, you are provided with regular visual updates of the paintings progress. Not only is it interesting seeing your painting being created from start to finish; but it also allows opportunity to ensure the painting is on track and turning out how you're expecting it to. Edits are easier to make along the way.

7)
Once your painting is finished, you are sent an image of the painting in its entirety, as well as close ups to help you examine the detail and accuracy achieved. Once happy, your balance invoice is sent to you and your painting and certificate of authenticity is then shipped upon payment.
