Marking the 90th anniversary of the first flight of the Supermarine Spitfire prototype on 5th March 1936.

It's a warm Spring day in 1940; only a couple of months prior to the Battle of Britain. In the Cambridgeshire countryside, a mother and her four children enjoy a picnic watching the trains go by; a slight distraction while her husband is away at war. As a J15 Class LNER steam locomotive approaches, the eldest son can't believe his eyes and points to the sky in excitement as three Mk1 Spitfires from nearby RAF Duxford No.19 Squadron fly low overhead; adding an amazing thrill to their trainspotting picnic.

The lead Spitfire is 19 Sqn Mk.1 "N3200" flown by Sqn Ldr Geoffrey Stephenson, who flew to Dunkirk, aiding the British evacuation. On May 26th 1940, it sustained a radiator hit and ditched on Sangatte beach. Stephenson was captured, made several escape attempts, ended up at Colditz Castle, but survived the war. The Spitfire lay buried in the sand until it's recovery in 1986 to a local museum. In 2007, she returned to the Imperial War Museum, Duxford; restoration began in 2012, and in 2014 she flew once more!
