ZOOM CLIMB AT LOSSIEMOUTH - Limited Edition Giclee Print

While the Tornado GR1/4 proved to be highly versatile throughout its service life, when it came to the air display it was without doubt the high speed and low level pass with the wings swept back that thrilled the crowds the most. Although each display season, the crew would make that year’s sequence their own; inevitably the show would finish with a high speed pass and max-G pull up to the vertical, a manoeuvre known as the Zoom Climb.

Description

In UK military service for 40 years, the Panavia Tornado was a stalwart of the Royal Air Force. Designed to meet the Cold War requirements of the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy, nearly 1000 aircraft were produced in three variants. The majority of aircraft were produced as the interdictor/strike variant, which the RAF designated as Tornado GR1 and post mid-life upgrade it became the Tornado GR4. While ready for the operational demands of the Cold War, it was the Gulf War in 1991 where Tornado first made her name. This was the start of nearly 30 years of continuous operations for the Tornado GR1/4 including missions over Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Kosovo and Libya.

RAF Lossiemouth had to wait until 1993 for the Tornado GR1 to be stationed there when 12(B) and XV(R) Squadrons arrived, quickly followed by 617 Squadron in 1994 and 14 Squadron in 2001. With 3 front-line squadrons and XV(R) Squadron as the Operational Conversion Unit; RAF Lossiemouth was the busiest fast jet base in the UK. XV(R) Squadron were not only tasked with delivering the conversion training for all RAF Tornado GR1/4 aircrew, but also for providing the RAF Tornado GR1/4 Display. For the aircrew and groundcrew on the Squadron, it was a huge privilege to be selected for the Display Team and the Team would typically display the aircraft on around 50 occasions each Summer across the UK and Europe, occasionally further afield.

IMPORTANT: Please note that when ordering either upgrade option, you have the choice of having the descriptive wording in the lower margin (as above) shortened so that it leaves out all text following on from "RAF Lossiemouth was the busiest fast jet base in the UK". This is so the scene description fits in with your edit/squadron requirements. Please let me know following your purchase what your preference is.
