Description
Beginning in the early 1980’s, specially trained Firefighters from the Kennedy Space Center Fire/ Rescue Department manned an Astronaut Rescue Team. This team was tasked with covering any off-nominal landings of a Space Shuttle within 25 nautical miles of KSC, whether on land or in the water. This was known as a Mode 7 contingency. They utilized the USAF HH-3’s and later the HH-60 helicopters; supporting every launch and landing at KSC until the end of the Space Shuttle program July 21, 2011.

This print is absolutely beautiful. As a firefighter who was part of this rescue procedure, it depicts what we were trained to do if the Space Shuttle missed the runway and landed in the waterways surrounding the Space Center.
